Meeting place Zürich HB
Chienbäse, Carnival on Fire

Join us for a visit of Chienbäse – probably one of the most spectacular carnival events of whole Switzerland.

Chienbäse is a parade in which big burning tree trunks and burning trailers are carried and pulled through the small historic city of Liestal. The flames of the trailer can get as high as the 3-story buildings around. Chienbäse takes place in Liestal, the capital of the canton Baselland in northern Switzerland. Join us and experience the unique atmosphere from the light of the fire in the dark city and feel the heat from the passing burning trailers.

Program: We will take the train together at Zürich HB to Liestal. There we will search a good place and watch the Chienbäse parade. Afterward, you can walk through the city, grab a drink at one of the many bars, eat a Bratwurst and listen to the carnival music groups. At around 10 PM, we will take the train back to Zürich HB.

Disclaimer: Please only join if you don’t have a problem with any of the following points!

  • On Chienbäse, there is always a huge crowd in the city. Once the parade started, it's almost impossible to get out of the crowd.
  • There will be no possibility to sit. We will probably stand (and also walk a bit around) for 5 hours.
  • The smoke of the fire is really intense. (It is not unusual to find black smoke particles if you blow your nose for the next few days). If you have asthma or any other breathing problems, it might not be the best event.
  • Your clothes (and you too) will have a strong smell of fire afterward. Also, it is possible that small burning particles burn small holes in sensitive clothes. So maybe do not come with your favorite jacket.
  • The parade is passing through the city gate. Since the fire of the trailers are higher than the gate, the firefighters cool it down with water, so it does not catch fire. Therefore, the floor is wet. Together with the ash, the water forms quite a nasty dirt. I would recommend coming in waterproof shoes. They will get pretty dirty.
